One of the features that makes the Village of Middleville truly unique is the Paul Henry – Thornapple Trail – and our proud identity as the first Trail Town in the region. The Thornapple River originally drew settlers here, offering transportation, power, and opportunity. Later, the arrival of the railroad connected Middleville to surrounding communities and supported well known industries such as French’s Flouring Mills, Warren Featherbone, and Cold Springs Creamery. When the railroad closed, its former rail bed was transformed into the Paul Henry – Thornapple Trail, now shared with the North Country Trail and enjoyed by thousands each year.

This paved regional pathway runs directly through our downtown and has become one of Middleville’s most beloved attractions. When complete, the trail will stretch 42 miles from Grand Rapids to Vermontville, offering views of rolling farmlands, peaceful woodlands, scenic stretches of the Thornapple River, and charming small towns. People come to Middleville specifically to walk, run, and bike along its beautiful route. The trail’s convenient downtown access also encourages visitors to explore local shops, parks, and community events, supporting our vibrant business district and reinforcing Middleville’s identity as a welcoming, outdoor oriented destination.

The trail provides year-round opportunities for healthy recreation in a safe, natural environment and is enjoyed by bikers, joggers, rollerbladers, wheelchair travelers, hikers, and nature lovers. Middleville residents take pride in sharing the quality of life found here rooted in our history, enriched by our community, and carried forward through our commitment to outdoor recreation. The Chief Noonday Chapter maintains the nearest section of the North Country Trail, helping ensure this remarkable resource remains a treasured part of our community.
